They get a call from Crowley, take the call outside. The building looks like a Pennsylvania Dutch barn with "hex" signs/decorations: These signs are usually found in central and eastern Pennsylvania, but I believe they buried Abaddon in Kansas... and they film the show in Canada...so I'm curious as where they found this location to shoot the episode. The location looks beautiful! Some believe these hex signs are merely folk art. Others believe that both the Pennsylvania German barn design and hex designs originate with the Alpine Germans* and are of pre-Christian Germanic origin. A misconception of the Pennsylvania Dutch Hex signs is that they originated from the Amish. The Hex signs are prevalent in Amish Country, but they are not Amish, you will not see Hex signs on any Amish barns. The Amish and Mennonites are known as plain folk and their religion prohibits such “fancy” ornamentation.** Of the two signs we see in the episode (the third is hidden by a post), the first one on the left can symbolize Faith, Fertility, Safeguard from Harm, and Protection. The sign in the middle has an 8-point star which can mean Perseverance. The circle surrounding the whole design is universal in protecting and enhancing the symbol(s) it contains. I would love to see this place used again - the Winchesters could always use some safeguards! Here's an example of some other hex signs: *Source: wikipedia **Source: handmadephilly.wordpress.com Leave a comment Share Flag Link Rowena's body symbols Apr. 28th, 2015 at 10:27 PM spn_symbols agent_jl36 Episode 10x17 "Inside Man" had Rowena trying a spell to get Dean: Let's take a look at the symbols found on her chest: The top one is Neptune and/or a trident with lots of meanings. The bottom is simply the alchemy sign for glass. Haven't found any deeper meaning for the glass symbol, but will continue to keep my eye out for something. I'm pretty sure the symbol you see on the right is for Reiki Energy, used for power and energy flow - which may be just what a witch like Rowena needs to cast a spell. The mark on the left is a bit harder to track down. One random web site said it was for making dreams come true and attracting success but didn't have a name for it. I did find something similar in a listing for protection sigils. Notice is also has a trident in the middle! And one bonus Rowena symbol! And now we know that Rowena (or at least the art department) is a fan of Prince! Pretty good lol SPN! Among the symbols along the sternum is this symbol: You can see it here on the x-ray: Sigil of Lucifer (“Seal of Satan”) The Sigil of Lucifer is a lesser known historical magical sigil used occasionally as an emblem by modern Satanists. The image originates in the sixteenth century Italian Grimoirium Verum, or “Grimoire of Truth.” Used in conjunction with other symbols, its original purpose of the sigil was to aid in a visual invocation of the angel Lucifer. The figure is probably derived from an earlier work, most likely drawn from a magic square whose origins are now lost. The emblem is sometimes referred to as the “Seal of satan,” although this is not a historical usage. (x) Some believe the sigil is an older symbol for Enki, one of the oldest Gods known to mankind, dating back over 12,000 years ago in the first human civilizations. Enki was known to be the leader of a group of Gods who came to aid humanity, offering knowledge and guidance. (more info at the link) Not too much of a stretch to use a symbol of Lucifer in a spell to hide someone from Lucifer himself. Again, it's fun to see the graphic artists use very real sigils and have them match the scene! You can also see it on the corners of this curse box, both from 7x16 Out With The Old episode: It's the Norse rune "Gar" "It is the beginning and end of the Runes and serves to seal magical formulas . Gar which means `spear` in Germanic represents both the spear of Woden, Gungnir and the holy lance of the sacred Aryan blood carried by Parsifal." (x) "...serves to seal magical formulas" is just what this rune is doing in 7x16, helping to bind the magic that is holding the cursed objects within. Very cool! "Another description of Gar says it means spear, referring to Odin's spear, but this is actually a "kenning" or wordplay on the World Tree, Yggdrasil, the shaft on which Odin hung, speared and bleeding, until he found the Runes. There is no evidence as to what its glyph means, but those who work with it are convinced that it is a picture of the World Tree, Yggdrasil. To draw Gar is to be told by the Universe that this is not a time to be second-guessing its plans. Instead, one should wait and watch and learn, and let things settle out. The World Tree branches out in many directions, and it is much larger than we are, and we cannot always see what is coming. Instead we must wait, hanging on its branch like Odin, until wisdom chooses to reveal itself to us." (x) Not sure how this correlates to the cursed objects in particular, but perhaps if we stretched it, we could say that by cursing an object, taking away it's intended purpose, one has "second-guessed" the original intended plans and by binding them with Gar, it may one day return to it's origins. Perhaps it's also a warning to let the magic within the circle, letting wisdom reveal that there is danger inside. It's a stretch but the above description was too cool not to include it! And of course, you can find Gar in the Lazarus Rising barn, right in the middle of Dean and Bobby! Tags: rune: gar , s4e1 , s7e16 7 comments Leave a comment Share Flag Link Unicursal Hexagram aka The Men of Letters symbol Apr. 27th, 2014 at 9:02 PM spn_symbols agent_jl36 We are all more than aware of this symbol now that we have been introduced to The Men of Letters: The unicursal hexagram is a six-pointed star that can be drawn in one continuous movement (This is significant when forming figures in ritual magick, where a continuous line is preferred to an interrupted movement). Its points are not equidistant, and the lines are not of equal length (unlike a more standard hexagram). It can, however, fit inside a circle with all six points touching the circle. (x) Like the pentagram, the lines are used to evoke or banish planetary, elemental, etc. forces depending on which way the lines are drawn: See THIS LINK for a much more in-depth look and explanation of these movements. The article shows not only the elements but each planetary force drawn to invoke and to banish. Before the MoL, we did see the symbol in the barn during Lazarus Rising: and on Mary's charm bracelet: This is also the main symbols for Thelema, a religion based on a philosophical law developed by Aleister Crowley.
